Dental Care

I find dental care for equines to be very important for longevity and good health.

  • Equine that are required to wear a bit are especially sensitive to good oral care and require periodic Equilibrations of the teeth.
  • Older equine can chew better with proper dental care
  • Dental equilibrations (Floating) are very important to keeping the mouth healthy.
Because they have back hypsodont type grinding teeth that as a young horse are present with the full length of tooth.  Then as the horse matures and ages the surface gets worn down and the tooth erupts out the skull and continues to wear and erupt in this cycle until in the mid to late twenties there is not much tooth left.

Smoothing and preventing sharp points on the edges of the chewing teeth that contact the cheeks and the tongue prevents painful sore.

Removing hooks on the upper 1st premolars and the last lower molar allows an equine to flex at the poll while being ridden.  This makes the horse and rider better able to communicate.

Indications of Dental Problems

  • dropping or wadding food
  • chewing oddly
  • odor from the mouth
  • losing weight
  • pulling on the reins
  • not flexing at the poll under saddle

Coggins and health certificates
